April is National Poetry Writing Month or NaPoWriMo, whereby a large number of barmy poets worldwide commit to writing and posting a poem each day during the month. I’ve taken part successfully for the past two years, and each time have found it an amazing experience. Not only has it been a rich source of inspiration, but I’ve also made many wonderful new writing friends and gained the confidence to begin reading my poetry at open-mic nights – something I never imagined I’d do.
NaPoWriMo was founded in 2003, when poet Maureen Thorson decided to take up the challenge (modeled after National Novel Writing Month), and challenged other poets to join her. Since then, the number of participants has grown larger every year, and many writers’ groups, local, national and even international, organise NaPoWriMo activities.
